The Real Facts About EIFS
- Will My EIFS Have to be Cut Open? -
Many people have asked if a moisture-intrusion inspection requires cutting open the EIFS as seen in the Dateline and WUSA TV segments. The answer is no. A competent inspector will know whether there is decay of the sheathing beneath the EIFS without cutting it. These cuts, usually referred to as "exposure cuts" or "test cuts", are usually performed in conjunction with documenting underlying damage and/or installation issues. This is usually required as evidence for litigation or arbitration. A normal inspection would not usually involve exposure cuts. An exception would be if the inspector suspected very serious damage to the underlying structure. A competent inspector would not make and exposure cut without the express permission of the home-owner. The exposure cuts done on the homes in the Dateline segment were necessary to show viewers typical damage.
